Are you ready to introduce science to your little ones? It could not get easier than this fun baking soda vinegar experiment that is so simple to set up and will keep your toddlers and preschoolers hooked for really long.
I am sure by now if you have been reading my blog, you guys know how much I love setting up activity bins for my daughter. It's the perfect way to teach her something new, as well as the activity is always contained inside the bin.
So there is less mess for me to clean up after!
This fun and easy science experiment using baking soda is one of my favourite activity to set up for my daughter.
Why is that so? Because it's so great for sooo many reasons.
- It introduces your little one to the power of science
- Helps improve his fine motor skills
- It is so colourful. Can really get the little one thinking!
- So amazing for independent play. Mine was hooked to the bin for up to 4 hours at a stretch
- There are so many possibilities to play with it. Give them droppers, syringes, ice cream cups and a lot more.
All this is possible for a simple minimal set up right in your home!
So are you ready to try this simple science experiment with your kids at home?
Fun science experiment for toddlers and preschoolers – Baking soda vinegar experiment
To set up this activity all you need are a few basic activity tools. Also, these tools are great to buy as they come in really handy for many other activities that you can do with your little ones.
- 28 qt storage bin from Walmart
- Food colors
- Bowl or an ice cube tray
- Tools to play (droppers, syringe, pipettes)
- Baking soda (I used one whole box with the 28qt storage bin)
- White vinegar
How to set it up
This fun science experiment is super easy to set up.
In four bowls or cups mix vinegar and food colours. You will get different colour bowls like yellow, green, purple, pink etc.
Place these bowls inside the bin.
In the remaining space inside the bin, empty and sprinkle the baking soda box. If you have more kids playing together with the bin then sprinkle two boxes of baking soda for more fun.
Throw in some droppers and syringe for your kids to use as tools to play with the baking soda bin.
How to play with the baking soda bin
Show your kids, what happens when you put drops of coloured vinegar on the baking soda. It's like an open volcano!
Ask them to mix different colours on the baking soda.
Also, you might have to show them a couple of times how to use the droppers, syringe etc.
Just watching the foam rise up and the colours mix will keep your little ones really amazed and hooked for a really long time.
What does your little one learn from this science experiment?
As easy as this activity is to set up. It actually teaches your kids a lot in return.
They are introduced to science. Through this, they get to perform their own little science experiment at a very young age and witness what happens when baking soda and vinegar mixes.
They are also more exposed to colours and what happens when it is mixed together.
They also get to practice on how to use droppers which is a great motor skill activity for kids.
And all this along with keeping them entertained for a really long time.
I ran out of baking soda so we had to stop the activity after 4 – 5 hours but I am pretty sure that if I had another box of baking soda my daughter would love to keep playing with it further.
