Looking for a fun and easy idea for your toddlers or preschoolers to keep them engaged at home? You can never go wrong with foil painting!
Last week, we had a crazy snow week and my little girl was absolutely bored. So to spice up our time at home as well as to keep my daughter engaged we did a ton of art and craft projects. They were all super easy to set up and were extremely successful in keeping my daughter busy as well as be creative.
My daughter is 3.5 years old, so she is somewhere between a fully grown toddler and preschooler and this easy foil painting art project was such a huge hit. Whether you have a toddler or a preschooler, your kids are going to absolutely love foil painting.
Foil painting is a creative motor skill activity that will help your little ones get really creative and enjoy exploring and mixing the different colours. Foil is so smooth in the structure that the paint will literally slip on it and it’s also a lot of fun exploring the lights reflecting off the foil paper.

Foil painting – An easy art activity for kids!
Of all the art activities that I have been doing with my daughter, I would definitely vote for foil painting was one of my daughter’s favourite as well as it required the least setup.
Things you need for the foil painting
How to set it up
We did this activity with my daughter seated on her toddler table chair that I had got from Amazon a year back.
Cut a small piece of foil paper around the size of construction paper a little smaller that that so that it can give your little enough space to explore the space. Although I did not tape the foil paper to the table, I would totally recommend to do that as it can give the foil canvas a little more support.
In a paper place or small bowl, mix a little washable paint of different colours with dish detergent.
Let your toddler use q-tips or paintbrushes to explore the different paint colours. I had to use paintbrushes as I had run out of q-tips at home, but I would totally recommend q-tips as they are easier to use.
What does your little one learn from foil painting?
- Motor skills – By using the paintbrush or q-tips your little one will be able to practice fine motor skills
- Colours – Exploring and mixing the different colours together will be a great learning activity for your little one
- Reflection of light – You can show your child how the light reflects off the foil paper
- Creativity – Just let your little one explores and be creative
