Things you will need
Activity set up
Start with the easiest shape a square and draw it out on a piece of paper using the popsicle sticks. As you draw the square talk to your kid about the square shape. Help him spot squares around your house.
Once your child understands what a square is and is able to put it together on his own then help him decorate it but in a way teach him to count the number of pom poms he puts on each stick like the picture shown below.
Repeat the same activity with different shapes like a triangle or rectangle. If your child is open to learning more then you can also show him pentagon, hexagon, or octagon.
It's not possible to lay out a circle with popsicle sticks but you can use pom pom balls instead to draw a circle to teach your little one.
What can you talk to your child when he is doing this activity?
- Can you spot a square around you?
- Can you spot a triangle around you?
- Can you spot a rectangle around you?
- Can you spot a circle around you?
- Can you tell me how many pom poms are on this stick?
- How many pom poms am I holding?
- What colors are these pom poms?
