Looking for helpful snow gears for your toddler so that they are well protected from the chilly weather and are able to enjoy playing in the snow for long. Find these basic 8 must-have snow gears that every toddler needs!

Playing in the snow is so much fun! Snow outside feels like a big soft blanket where you can jump, lie down, make a snowman, have a snowball fight or my favourite part go sledging. Whatever activity you chose, playing in the snow is always a great experience not only for your little ones but also for the entire family.

But what happens when you are not properly dressed for the snow?

Errr… Frostbites and a lot more can happen.

After living for almost a decade in one of the coldest cities of Western NY where we often get 8-10 inches of snow for close to 4-5 months in a year, I have learnt to make peace with the cold harsh weather here. Especially now that I have a little one of my own, it is just impossible for us all to stay indoors for long as it starts to drive us all insane. 🙂

When the sun outside is at its best, i.e., mostly in the afternoons we spend close to 1-2 hours playing in the snow, where I let my daughter jump, build a snowman and just have fun doing whatever she wants with the snow outside.

And my biggest achievement of it all is that I have finally mastered the art of packing up my daughter to the best form possible so that she is the most comfortable playing in the snow and to the point where the snow around her just feels like a big squishy blanket.

When it comes to winter outfits – layering your little one is going to be your best strategy. Below are the eight very helpful snow gears that your little toddler should have over his usual outfit.

So, let’s get started!

1. Sweatshirt

Deciding whether your toddler needs a sweatshirt usually depends upon how cold weather outside are you are dealing with. Out here in Buffalo, we get a lot of lower negative temperatures which causes a lot of chills if not properly dressed. So, I usually dress up my daughter with an additional long sleeve sweater/sweatshirt over her usual long-sleeve shirt. It helps keep her really cozy and warm on the inside.

2. Snow suit

This is going to be your most important snow gear that will allow your toddler to be able to roll in the snow or do anything with it. The snowsuit acts like a shield against the snow and prevents anything from getting wet from the inside. This is the snowsuit that I have for my daughter. It is basically a waterproof bib overall with boot gaiters to keep the snow out.

I also like this snuggly bunny bunting that is a one-piece snowsuit and comes with a hoodie attached.

Some of my other favourite options for snowsuits are.

3. Winter coat

A good winter coat is a great piece of investment for your little ones in the winter season. They are a necessity whether your little one is going to play in the snow or not. They can be worn over any usual outfit while stepping out in the winter.

Over the years, I have collected a few good winter coats for my daughter. For playing in the snow, I usually make her wear the coat over her snowsuit.

While choosing a good winter coat/ jacket, I always look for temperature sustainability in the jacket. You will be able to find that information on the tags of the jacket.

The ones that I have for my daughter usually can sustain in almost -35deg C. Sharing a few similar good options here.

4. Woolen gloves + Waterproof gloves

Hand protection is one of the most crucial steps while dressing up for the snow. I often feel that our fingers tend to give in the first in chilly weather. They are more susceptible to the cold and easily become stiff which can often get really painful to deal with.

After trying out a few different options with my daughter I found that layering her hand with a woollen glove on the inside and the waterproof glove on the outside was the best combination to go for. It helped keep her fingers warm and cozy while she played with snow for some time even up to two hours at a stretch or more.

5. Snow hat

Have you ever had a bad headache that just won’t go because you have been exposed to the chilly winds? I have had those many times. Imagine what it would do to a little toddler?

When it comes to choosing a snow hat, I look for the material of the hat that it is made up of, it should have ear flaps and the temperature rating on it.

I use this snow hat for my daughter and absolutely love it. Sharing a few similar options like these!

6. Long woollen socks

I always stress on wearing long woollen socks with the snowsuit overall because just in case if any snow does get into your toddler’s snow pants, still the chilling effect on his legs would be less than usual with the woollen socks under the snow pants.

I always dress up my daughter with jogger pant or lounge woollen pant underneath her snowsuit as just having the snowsuit is not enough.

7. Snowboots

Finally, the last part of the entire outfit is the snow boots. Having comfortable snow boots is very important. There are a ton of high-quality snow boots available for toddlers. Sharing a few of the bestsellers.

8. Mask (optional)

Having a mask on is something I practice with my daughter when it’s too windy outside. Personally, I don’t prefer having a mask on my toddler due to breathlessness hazards as she is always jumping and running around in the snow which is very tiring.

I only use it on her when we are walking in a park and the weather is too windy.

I hope this article is helpful to you in dressing up your toddler for some amazing snow fun. Playing in the snow is a beautiful and learning experience for your toddlers, so make sure to dress them right so that you can enjoy this experience to the fullest.
