Teething is a very exciting milestone, but it can also be a very challenging to soothe a teething baby. Crankiness, drooling, clinginess and sleepless nights are at peak for a baby going through teething.

In my case, my daughter did not have her first pair of teeth till she was 13 months old. After 13 months, I could see two cute top front incisors appear which made her look like a cute bunny. She is now a 18 months old baby and is still teething and I often find her really uncomfortable because of that.

SIGNS OF EARLY TEETHING

  • Drooling
  • Crankiness
  • Sore gums
  • Putting fingers in the mouth all the time or trying to chew on anything available
  • Loss of appetite
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Sometimes fever

Sharing a few of my experienced methods that has helped me soothe my teething baby.

Giving her cool things to chew on

I usually take a clean wet washcloth in a plastic bag and keep it in the fridge for a couple of hours. Once it’s cool enough, I give it to my daughter to chew on. This helps numb and soothe her inflamed and sore gums. Also, I give her cold mashed banana or other cooled fruits and vegetables to chew on. To prevent choking, make sure that these vegetables and fruits are meshed properly. This method has helped me soothe my teething baby.

Massage the gums

Another great way to provide teething relief is massaging those sore gums. After you have washed your hands, using your finger gently massage your little one’s sore throat in circular motions.

Massage with a cool metal spoon

Cool a metal spoon in the fridge and then rub the back of the spoon on your baby’s gum. It is an easy and very effective teething remedy.

Chilled teething toys

Teethers are a great way to help ease a baby during her their teething phase as well as keep them distracted from the pain. There are many varieties of these toys available in the market. Once you purchase these toys, make sure to clean them and cool them in your fridge (if specified in the toy manual) before giving it to your little one. I always like to go for the gel-free ones. I have listed a few of my favorites below.

Give your child a foot massage

Studies in reflexology have identified connections between certain spots in the foot and other parts of the body. The toes correlate with the head and teeth. So by gently massaging your child’s foot around the toes may offer some relief.

Breastfeed

Breastfeeding generally is a great way to provide relief to your little one from any discomfort that they are going through. It helps your kid feel at ease, safe and comfortable.

Consult with your pediatrician about over-the-counter medication

If after trying the above measures you still feel very concerned about your child’s teething phase, you can consult your pediatrician for medication that can help your little one.

Lots of cuddles

Lastly make sure to give your little one as many cuddles you can. Find s good chair and you can also rock your little one and help them find comfort during this time. Being close to a mom is very comforting for a little one.

Teething can be a difficult time for your child and it varies from child to child and also the timing varies. As I have mentioned earlier, for my little girl, her first pair of teeth did not appear till she was 13 month old. This is a phase that every little one has to go through and the best thing you can do for them during this time is to help them relieve of this pain by trying some of the above measures and giving them lots of love.
