A newborn sleeping peacefully.

Let’s face it, from the moment you found out you were expecting, experienced parents must have warned you about those dreadful sleepless nights. And while you’re here, experiencing it yourself, all you can think about is just 5 minutes of peaceful sleep.

Unfortunately, newborns don’t quite understand the concept of day or night, which is why their sleep schedules are around the clock. They also have small stomachs that can’t keep them full for long, so frequent feeds are also necessary.

However, parenthood doesn’t necessarily have to be a roller coaster ride. If you try some tricks from experienced mothers, you’ll save yourself time. Here are some proven tricks to help your little angel (and you, of course) sleep at night:

Don’t Forget to Swaddle

Did you know that from birth right up to five months, babies tend to have a startle reflex? Yes, that’s right. This means they often feel like they’re going to fall, because of which they jerk and tend to wake up from their sleep. One of the best ways to deal with this reflex is to keep a tight swaddle. This helps them feel protected and allows them to sleep longer. Some babies might not be fans of the swaddling process; however, this doesn’t mean you should stop trying. Swaddling them well reminds them of how they were in the womb, so they’ll eventually enjoy it.

Try the 4-Step B’s

When it comes to babies, consistency is key. Creating a specific bedtime routine can work like magic. Begin with giving your baby a soothing bath and finish it off with an oil massage. Next, swaddle your baby and read a book to them. Hearing a parent’s voice can have a surprisingly calming effect on babies. Once you notice their eyes closed, switch off the light and tuck them in bed. If they’re still awake, you can give them a bottle to help them relax and feel full.

Change the Diaper

Frequent diaper changes can disrupt your baby’s sleep pattern. This is why we recommend changing their diaper right before the nighttime feed. Unless they soil the diaper during the night, only wake them up for their feed.
