It’s January now and we are in the peak of the winter season here in Buffalo. After spending seven beautiful years in this cold and wonderful city, I have realized how important it is to take care of your health and make it your priority in the winter season. We don’t realize this often but with the holiday season upon us, family get together, dinners and the excitement of a New Year, it is very common for most of us to ignore our health. In all the ongoing excitement, we are unknowingly more careless than before and often do things like step out in the cold without wearing proper winter gear or skipping multivitamins here and there. This does begin to show on your body and you can often notice a drop-in motivation and energy level post the holidays.
Buffalo is the second coldest city in the United States and we are down with snow for close to five months in a year with temperatures mostly sitting below freezing, and there are always up to 5-7 inches of snow everywhere around us. Sounds crazy but that’s considered normal here! During snowstorms, everything around here, such as the schools and offices go on to operate like normal. Hence learning from all my past experiences (good and bad), it is always my topmost priority to keep as healthy as possible during the winter season without the cold and illness kicking in. These are a few steps that I always make sure to do at the start of every winter so that I am always in the best of my health and so is everyone in the family and we can enjoy this season all the more!

Wash your hands often
This is very common but often ignored and the easiest way for germs to transfer. Washing your hands frequently throughout the day is an absolute must-do activity to support your health in winter. This habit does not only helps protect your immune system and prevents you from developing the flu and cold, but it protects others around you. Also, another great tip is to keep a sanitizer close to your sink to make sure that you are getting rid of all the required germs once and for all.

Hydrate
Although you are not sweating in the winter, staying hydrated is as crucial in winter as it is in summer. Keeping hydrated will help you regulate your body temperature properly and will provide you with the much-needed moisture that you keep losing due to the dry air coming from the heater in your home.
Always keep winter gears handy
So important and something that I have started to practice with time. The mornings at home are the most chaotic and I am always in a hurry to get to work and drop Mishika to school. And there are many times when I have rushed out of my home without proper winter gears and ended up getting a cold or headache due to the cold winds outside. After going through this issue several times, I now make sure to keep all my winter gear (snow boots, muffler, earmuffs, gloves, coat and etc.) for me as well as for my family in a commonplace so that they are easier to grab and go and we never miss them.

Drink herbal tea
Unwinding with an herbal tea like lemon or chamomile is known to help relax as well as boost your immune system. Packed with antioxidants and vitamins they are great for your health. Drinking a cup of hot herbal tea before bedtime seems to do the trick for me!
Get moving for 30 minutes a day
With the days getting shorter and the cold winds looming outside, working out gets even more harder than before. Even for as little as 10 minutes a day, trying to stay active can contribute to good health as well as a healthy immune system. With such great resources available online (cardio, yoga videos), it has now become more than easy to work out at home and skip trying up step out altogether.

What else do you guys do to protect yourself in winter?
Hey Rupal,
Eating a well-balanced diet including whole grains, lean meats, fish, poultry, nuts and herbs as well as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables are essential to the boost immune system.
We can also have an optimum intake of foods rich in vitamin C, as it helps to strengthen our immune system and to keep our body healthy in winters.
Physical activity is an important aspect to keep one fit throughout the winter. In my opinion – a good amount of sleep helps to keep the body fit for prolong time and it really eliminates stress.
Eventually, thanks for exploring your healthy experience with us.
With best wishes,
Amar Kumar
