Are you in the 33%of adults in the U.S. who are at risk for chronic kidney disease? This is a question I recently asked myself after I found out about the kidney risk factors associated with having type 2 diabetes. While I don’t have type 2 diabetes myself, both of my parents have been diagnosed with it, and if I develop type 2 diabetes in the future, I will be at risk for chronic kidney disease, too.

We all know the struggles that a person with type 2 diabetes has to go through, but I was really amazed when I found out that people who are living with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

Did you know that?

  • 37 million adults in the U.S. have chronic kidney disease, and most of them don’t know it.
  • Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease.

However shocking these stats are, they are huge eye-openers. With both my parents having type 2 diabetes, learning about the kidney risks associated with it has been life-changing and puts me in a better position to be able to take care of my parents.

“Are You the 33%?” quiz

The National Kidney Foundation created the one-minute “Are You the 33%?” quiz to help those with type2 diabetes understand their risk factors for chronic kidney disease in the future. I am going to encourage my parents to take this quiz today and then take the necessary precautions that can help them take care of their health in the future. Chronic kidney disease, if diagnosed early on, is treatable. Getting the proper care to treat chronic kidney disease may slow or prevent the progression to kidney failure, as well as reduce the risk for complications such as heart disease and stroke.
