Looking for easy toddler pom pom activities? Then you can't go wrong with this easy to set up pom poms color sorting activity.

Lately, my little girl has been obsessed with pom poms. Every activity that we do needs to have pom poms in it. With the pandemic, trying to keep kids occupied at home has become all the more difficult. With limited places to go to, you are left with trying to engage a curious mind who just wants to explore and learn as many new things as possible.

For the last few months, I had made it a personal goal of mine to do at least one activity with my toddler girl. At first, it was really difficult as she was least interested and had zero concentration towards the activity. But slowly with time I have noticed a change in her where she likes to sit down with me and take part in the activity on the table.

Before we get into the activity, if you have no idea on how to introduce an activity to your kids, then check out this blog here on how to set up an activity for your child that they will get instantly get attracted to and will love to do it again and again.

Color sorting pom poms is an easy to do activity with toddlers which eventually once mastered by them can keep them engaged for long. This activity will help them identify colors, learn to count, develop their fine motor skills, help them identify patterns and even learn to identify shapes if you are using an assorted pom pom bag (like the one that I have used).

Important skills developed

  • Identify colors
  • Learn to count
  • Fine motor skills
  • Identify shapes

Things you will need

Activity set up

It's always best to present an activity to your kid in an organized way so that he is tempted to give it a try and also you are not left behind cleaning all the mess.

For this simple activity, all you require is a plastic bowl or a paper plate to organize the pom poms neatly in one spot. It is best to display this activity on a small table chair set up like this one or on the ground.

Place an empty carton next to the paper plate and show your child how to collect a single color set of the pom poms in one slot of the carton. Keep repeating this activity a couple of times with your little one and then just sit back and watch your kid do it.

You can also motivate your child to place the exact number of pom poms in each slot and in a way teach them how to count or help them sort them out according to the different shapes of the pom poms.

What can you talk to your child when he is doing this activity?

  • Talk about colors like can you tell me which is the color red? or what else can you spot in the house that is the same color as this pom pom?
  • Talk about numbers like how many pom poms are you holding in your hand? or how many red pom poms are there in one slot?
  • Also talk about the different shapes if you are using an assorted pom pom set like are these two pom poms of the same shape? or how are they different from each other?
