With the warmer months around us, I am so excited about all the fun and celebratory moments that are ahead of us. From barbecues, get-togethers with friends and family, vacations, spring or summer holidays the list of reasons to celebrate are endless. And one thing that remains the common in all these moments, is the love for good and delicious food that binds everyone together.
For the longest time, I was on the lookout for sweet onions that could go really well with all my bbq recipes, meals etc and also taste delicious and so when I stumbled upon Vidalia onions I was beyond excited.
What makes Vidalia onions taste so great?
These onions have a unique distinctive sweet flavor which once added to any meal makes it sweeter. Even my four year old daughter loves the Vidalia onions sweet taste and insists on eating it with all her meals.
When are the Vidalia onions available?
These sweet treats are only available seasonally during the spring and summer months. And due to their high demand, once these Vidalia onions hit the stores in April, they typically run out of stock by August or September.
Where are the Vidalia Onions harvested?
Vidalia onions are hand planted and harvested in only 20 counties in South Georgia and are only available from April to August each year. So make sure to get them while you can!
How can Vidalia onions be used in cooking?
Just like any other onions, you can use these sweet onions in any recipe you make. From chutneys, salads, barbecues, as a side dish, these can be enjoyed with any meals that you cook.
And in this blog post today, I am sharing with all of you, one of my all time favorite recipe – peach chutney that I love making at home with Vidalia onions. Either you can enjoy this peach chutney as a dip on the side, or add it to your tacos or enjoy it as a topping over your burrata bread, this is surely a winner.
I usually make this peach chutney in a large quantity and keep it in the refrigerator so that they it’s easily available to snack on when needed.

Vidalia Onion Peach Chutney
Ingredients
- 1 TBSP canola oil
- 1 Vidalia onion, diced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1tsp grated ginger
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 Pounds firm peaches, peeled, cored and medium diced
- ½ tsp chili flakes
- 1 pinch dry mustard
Preparation
- In a Dutch oven over medium heat, add canola oil. When pan is hot, add Vidalia onion and stir gently until onion start to become translucent.
- Add garlic and ginger to pan. Stir one minute, but don’t let garlic start to brown.
- Add brown sugar and apple cider vinegar. Mix all together.
- Once ingredients in pan are mixed and sugar begins to dissolve, add peaches, chili flakes and dry mustard. Stir well.
- Reduce heat to medium low. Cover Dutch oven with lid and continue to let simmer until peaches become soft but still hold their shape, about 35-45 minutes.
- Remove from heat and serve. Chutney can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, including on a charcuterie board or atop chicken and pork.
Storing instructions for the Vidalia Onions Peach Chutney
You can store the chutney in airtight jars. Chutney can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
